State Lawmaker Files Bill to Resume A&M-UT Football

A Texas state representative has filed a bill calling to resume the football series between A&M and the University of Texas.

Ryan Guillen (Aggie Class of 2000) represents  House District 31, comprised of the south Texas counties of Atascosa, Brooks, Duval, Jim Hogg, Kenedy, La Salle, Live Oak, McMullen, Starr, and Willacy.

A BILL TO BE ENTITLED AN ACT relating to an annual football game between The University of Texas at Austin and Texas A&M University.

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:

SECTION 1. Subchapter Z, Chapter 51, Education Code, is amended by adding Section 51.9246 to read as follows: Sec. 51.9246. FOOTBALL GAME BETWEEN THE UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS AT AUSTIN AND TEXAS A&M UNIVERSITY. (a) The intercollegiate football teams of The University of Texas at Austin and Texas A&M University shall annually play a nonconference, regular-season football game against one another. (b) If The University of Texas at Austin or Texas A&M University refuses to play the football game required by Subsection (a) in a year, the university may not award to any student for the following academic year an athletic scholarship, grant, or similar financial assistance funded with state money and conditioned on the student’s participation on the university’s intercollegiate football team.

SECTION 2. Section 51.9246, Education Code, as added by this Act, applies beginning with the intercollegiate football season for the 2014-2015 academic year.

SECTION 3. This Act takes effect immediately if it receives a vote of two-thirds of all the members elected to each house, as provided by Section 39, Article III, Texas Constitution. If this Act does not receive the vote necessary for immediate effect, this Act takes effect September 1, 2013.
