State Agencies Directed to Cut More

Less than a week after the Texas A&M System Board of Regents were updated about state funding, comes another hit from Austin.

All state agencies were sent a letter Tuesday calling to reduce spending in this year’s budget by an additional two and a half percent.

The A&M System’s Vice Chancellor for Governmental Relations, Stanton Calvert, told the Regents the option of tapping into the state’s rainy day fund will be difficult, particularly in the House.

Dr. Calvert also notes the Texas House has nearly 40 new members, which he said is the largest turnover in 50 years.

While the budget has been drawing headlines, Calvert says redistricting is another major issue, especially in the House.

The Associated Press reported the cuts are supposed to be in place before the legislative session starts January 11th.
