“Stancu is clearly playing as well as anyone in the country, and winning the regional adds to her impressive string of results,” Texas A&M head coach Howard Joffe said. “I’m not sure today was Tina’s very best tennis, but she was characteristically ferocious and competitive.”
Stancu and Hristov, both from Romania, were the No. 1 seed in the doubles tournament and also were the Texas Regional reigning champion as Texas A&M swept both the singles and doubles titles for the first time in school history last year. The Aggie duo, No. 8 in the 2013 ITA preseason doubles rankings and looking to earn an automatic berth into the USTA/ITA National Indoor Championships in New York next month, had won four consecutive matches to reach this morning’s finals, where they went up against Breaunna Addison and Pippa Horn of Texas. Stancu and Hristov, however, were unable to claim their second consecutive regional title, falling to the Texas tandem, 8-3.
“Our doubles wasn’t up to par today, and I will say the Longhorns played rather well,” Joffe said.
Each of the regional winners across the country earn an automatic invitation to the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships, Nov. 7-10 in Flushing, N.Y. Stancu had already earned a berth in singles at the national indoor championships after reaching the semifinals at the prestigious Riviera/ITA All-American Championships earlier this month in California.
A&M had eight players, including three freshmen and two three sophomores, competing in the five-day tournament that featured some of the top players from across the state. The Aggies went a combined 18-8 in singles and 8-4 in doubles play.
“The performances overall were very encouraging with the freshmen Rutuja Bhosale, Jana McCord and Saska Gavrilovska all getting quality singles wins,” Joffe said. “Anna Mamalat beat the No. 1 seed and 10th-ranked player in nation, and Hristov performed well, too.
“Our group needs to continue to work hard in the classroom and on court, and I feel like we will have a formidable team when the season starts.”
Later this week, Stancu, Hristov and twins Ines and Paula Deheza head to Orlando, Fla., to compete at the USTA Clay Court Invitational at Disney, Oct. 24-27.
