Staffing Changes Approved by Bryan School Board

The Bryan school board was updated Monday on administration plans to cover a deficit of $2.9 million dollars in the 2012-2013 budget.

Bryan ISD Communications Director Sandy Farris says the board approved next year’s staffing formula where teachers will be in the classroom six periods a day.

Farris says laying off teachers is the “absolute last resort” while others could be reassigned.

The board’s decision for teachers to be in the classroom six periods next year also eliminates a planning period with other instructors.  The board gave campus administrators the flexibility to organize their master schedules for additional planning time as long as they stay within their allocated number of teaching units.

Farris says this is the last week for qualifying district employees to take an early resignation incentive. It’s available to the first 150, and as of Monday 50 teachers and 15 other employees have enrolled.

Sandy Farris visits with WTAW’s Bill Oliver.
