GALVESTON, Texas (AP) _ Galveston tourism officials say spring break on the island — which is still rebuilding after Hurricane Ike — was a success this month.
Spring break visitors over the past three weeks could result in a $36 million economic impact for the island.
Officials say while that was slightly down from last year, it was far more than what they expected as Galveston continues recovering after Ike’s 12-foot storm surge rumbled ashore near the city on Sept. 13.
Officials say hotel occupancy during weekends in March surpassed 80 percent and attendance was above projections at all area attractions.
As Galveston continues to rebuild and more businesses reopen, island tourism officials have been on a statewide media blitz to promote that Galveston is open to visitors.
Tourism official Lou Muller says they’re excited to see the tourists back on the island and look forward to busy months ahead.
