Sooners beat A&M, 6-1, in Softball opener

COLLEGE STATION, Texas – The No. 14 Texas A&M softball team fell, 6-1, to sixth-ranked Oklahoma, Friday at the Aggie Softball Complex.

Oklahoma now leads the three-game conference series between the two schools, 1-0.

The Aggies kept pace with the Sooners through five innings but five runs by OU in the final two innings gave the visitors a 6-1 victory.

“It’s tough against a team like that,” head coach Jo Evans said. “You’ve got to take outs when you can get them. I just really felt like we lost our composure. We expect our team to have some composure in situations like that and I think we showed some immaturity out there.”

A double by OU pitcher Keilani Ricketts plated a 1-0 run for the Sooners in the top of the fourth. The runner, Destinee Martinez, reached on the first hit of the game and stole second before Ricketts’ ball went into right-center.

The Aggies used three hard-hit singles in the bottom of the inning to regain control and tie the game at 1-1. Senior Natalie Villarreal led off with a single up the middle before another single past second base, by sophomore Cassie Tysarczyk with two outs, put two on base. Sophomore Nicole Morgan followed Tysarczyk to the plate and pounded a line drive through the left side that sent Villarreal home to tie the game.

In the top of the sixth, OU took another one-run lead, on a solo home run over right field by catcher Jessica Shults.

The 2-1 lead by the Sooners expanded to 6-1 in the top of the seventh. A pair of walks and a throwing error scored one run before Shults’ second home run of the game, a three-run long ball gave the Sooners their final 6-1 victory.

“The walks killed us, and of course the error,” Evans said. “Mel walks a kid and still gets a chance to get out of it. I was really frustrated with that inning, with Mel going full-count on a couple of kids and then not even being close walking those two. She’s better than that. She’s got to be tougher than that. When you’re playing a great team like that you’ve got to be able to make adjustments. You’ve got to recognize things that are going on in an at bat.”

Junior Mel Dumezich had a single down the right-field line in the bottom of the seventh but it wasn’t enough as OU took a 1-0 jump on the series.

Dumezich (20-9) threw 6 2/3 innings for the loss. She struck out five batters and gave up two earned runs on six hits. Ricketts (20-4) fanned 12 batters in seven complete innings, allowing one earned run on five hits by the Aggies.

The Aggies and Sooners will rematch tomorrow in game two of the three-game Big 12 series at 3 p.m. The game will be broadcast live in College Station on Sports Radio 1150 AM. To learn more about Texas A&M softball, log on to AggieAthletics.com or follow @AggieSoftball on Twitter.
