COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Texas A&M senior midfielder Shea Groom was one of 16 semifinalists for the Missouri Athletic Club Hermann Trophy, the National Soccer Coaches Association of America announced on Tuesday afternoon.
The MAC Hermann Trophy is the highest individual intercollegiate award administered by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America, and presented annually at the Missouri Athletic Club in St. Louis. This year’s trophy presentation and banquet will take place Friday, Jan. 9. Groom is angling to become the first Aggie to ever earn the honor.
In November, Groom became the first Texas A&M to earn SEC Offensive Player of the Year recognition and she was named to the SEC Tournament All-Tournament squad after scoring the lone goal in A&M’s 1-0 win over Kentucky in the championship match.
Recently, Groom became the third Aggie to earn Academic All-America honors and the first A&M player to ever receiver first-team recognition. Elisabeth Jones was selected Academic All-America Second Team in 2007 and Rachel Shipley was named a third-teamer in 2010.
Groom ranks third in the SEC in goals (16) and points (39) this season. She leads the conference with seven game-winning goals on the year.
For her career, Groom has appeared in 84 matches, including 79 starts. Her 107 points and 41 goals both rank sixth on Texas A&M’s career charts. She is one of 10 active NCAA Division I players with 40 or more goals and 20 or more assists.
Groom has been honored repeatedly for her prowess on the field and in the classroom during her four years at Texas A&M. Last season, she was named to the National Soccer Coaches of Association of America (NSCAA) All-America Third Team as well as the NSCAA Scholar All-America First Team. The Liberty, Missouri native is a three-time All-SEC selection and has twice been named to the SEC Academic Honor Roll.
The Liberty, Missouri native is part of a record-setting senior class. Groom and her eight fellow seniors have amassed a school-record 75 wins in their career and last Saturday they became the first squad to earn a College Cup bid when they toppled Penn State, 2-1, in a NCAA Quarterfinal match at Ellis Field. The Aggies are 22-2-2 on the season and claimed the SEC Double this season, winning the regular-season crown with a 9-1-1 league ledger and earning the tournament title with a 1-0 win over Kentucky in the championship match. A&M is the first team since Florida to claim the SEC Double in back-to-back seasons since Florida in 2000 and 2001.
The Maroon and White play Virginia in the College Cup semifinal round at 4 pm Central on Friday in Boca Raton, Florida. The match will be broadcast on ESPNU.
