Smoking Suitcase at Houston Intercontinental

HOUSTON (AP) _ A ruptured, smoking suitcase from an arriving international flight drew fire crews and bomb specialists to Houston’s busiest airport.

The incident happened about 2:15 p.m. Tuesday at George Bush Intercontinental Airport. Assistant Fire Chief Jack Williams says luggage was being off-loaded from a KLM flight from Amsterdam when a baggage handler found a bag that appeared to have ruptured with smoke coming from it.

The handler took the bag and carried it outside the apron and called emergency crews. Williams said bomb crews hit the package with a water gun and were still examining the package as of late Tuesday afternoon.

Williams says there was no explosion and no injuries. He said airport operations appeared to be unaffected.
