Six Million Dollar Bryan Animal Center Presented To The City Council

About four years from now, the city of Bryan might start construction on a $6.258 million dollar animal control center.

This week’s city council workshop included a consultant’s recommendation to build a new facility at MLK and Moss Streets, west of the freeway. The location was selected because, among other things, it was buffered from residential neighborhoods and commercial buildings.

The council was told that problems with the current animal shelter included the need for more “animal habitats”, that existing “spaces are used for multiple purposes, compromising their primary functions”, “many program needs do not have specifically designated space”, “rooms are used as passageways for unrelated functions”, the “facility needs to improve accessibility”, and “public access to animal habitats and co-mingled air creates potential for disease to spread”.

Currently, the city of Bryan has a capacity of 92 animals. The new building would address the future need to house 140 dogs and cats, along with livestock.

The council was also told the number of animals coming into the center has dropped since the city took over that responsibility more than six years ago.

The new animal center is included in the city’s list of 2022 capital improvements projects.
