Ship Channel Section Reopens After Spill

HOUSTON (AP) _ Three miles of the Houston Ship Channel has reopened three days after an oil spill closed the section.

The affected part of the channel was a secluded northern segment.

About 10,500 gallons of oil spilled late Friday after a barge struck the 458-foot tank vessel Chemical Supplier near Brady’s Island and the Interstate 610 bridge. The motor vessel received a 2-foot by 4-foot gash in one of its fuel tanks. No injuries were reported.

Coast Guard Chief Petty Officer Mark Mackowiak says the spill had “very minimal impact to the overall port operations.”

The Coast Guard spokesman said about 4,200 gallons had been removed as of Monday.
