NEW ORLEANS – National weekly honors from the United States Track & Field Cross Country Coaches Association included Texas A&M’s Shelbi Vaughan being named the women’s Division I National Athlete of the Week following her dominant discus victory at the Texas Relays this past weekend.
Vaughan broke her Aggie school record with an improvement of four and a half feet, reaching a distance of 198 feet, 10 inches (60.61) that becomes the current U.S. and collegiate leader for 2014 while ranked No. 10 in the world this season.
Recording the mark on her first throw, Vaughan successfully defended her 2013 Texas Relays title and bettered the field by 24 feet. Vaughan’s effort is also equal No. 10 on the U.S. collegiate all-time list, sharing the position with Arizona State’s Anna Jelmini, the 2013 NCAA Champion in the discus.
Vaughan’s victory at the Texas Relays was one of seven winning efforts for the Aggies at the four-day meet that totaled 39,985 spectators over the weekend. The A&M women claimed its first ever win in the sprint medley relay and Brittany Wooten won the B division pole vault. LaQue Moen-Davis won the A division triple jump while the tandem of Jordan Wilson Melissa Mays finished 1-2 in the B division of the triple jump.
Wayne Davis II recorded the second fastest time in the world for the 110 hurdles under all-conditions with his winning mark of 13.45 that was aided by a 2.1 wind, just over the allowable 2.0 for record purposes. The Aggies won the 4×200 relay in 1:20.78, matching their winning time from a year ago.
As runner-up by 0.01 in the men’s 4×100, the A&M foursome of Prezel Hardy, Jr., Shavez Hart, Michael Bryan and Deon Lendore broke the Aggie school record with a clocking of 38.30 seconds. The previous school record of 38.38 was set in 2011 during the NCAA Championship semifinal.
Florida, who won the race in 38.29, and Texas A&M each moved up the all-time collegiate list from their Texas Relays performances as both ran the fastest times ever produced in the month of March.
