PARIS, Texas (AP) _ Advocates question why an 18-year-old East Texan with profound mental disabilities was sentenced to 100 years in prison in a child sex abuse case.
The Dallas Morning News reports a neighbor in Paris found Aaron Hart fondling her 6-year-old stepson last September.
Hart has an IQ of 47. He never learned to read or write and speaks unsteadily.
His parents say Hart couldn’t understand the seriousness of what he did.
Hart pleaded guilty to aggravated sexual assault and indecency by contact.
Judge Eric Clifford decided to stack the sentences after jurors in February settled on two five-year terms and three 30-year terms.
Hart was on probation for misdemeanor theft. He also faced a misdemeanor charge of criminal mischief.
District Attorney Gary Young says he sympathizes with Hart’s situation but stands by his decision to prosecute on five counts.
Hart is serving his time at a special prison for inmates with mental disabilities.
