BIRMINGHAM – Texas A&M had two athletes selected for SEC weekly honors as Devin Dixon was named the men’s Runner of the Week and Sammy Watson was chosen as the women’s Freshman of the Week.
Competing in adverse weather conditions with temperatures in the 50s along with a steady wind, Dixon and Watson both turned in impressive marks in claiming victories in the 400m and 800m, respectively, during the Houston Alumni Invitational.
Dixon clocked 46.19 in the 400m, just off the career best of 45.96 he set to open the outdoor season, to better a field that included Tulane’s Raymond Kibet (46.59) and Houston’s Kahmari Montgomery (47.10).
Last season Kibet reached the NCAA semifinal and also competed in the opening round of the IAAF World Championships. Montgomery, meanwhile, is a former SEC indoor and outdoor 400m champion during his freshman season at Missouri.
Watson won the 800m convincingly with a time of 2:03.94, bettering the field by six-plus seconds while breaking the stadium record of 2:04.97. Watson’s time currently ranks second among Division I collegians, trailing a 2:03.92 by Miami freshman Kayla Johnson.
Watson’s time leads the SEC by two-plus seconds and currently ranks second on the 2018 World junior list behind Johnson.
This week the Aggies travel to UCLA for the Rafer Johnson/Jackie Joyner-Kersee Invitational, a scored meet that will be held on Saturday, April 15.
