ATHENS, Ga. – Texas A&M’s Cristina Stancu and Stefania Hristov saw their season come to an end as they suffered a 6-3, 7-6 (4) loss to Georgia State’s Masa Grgan and Abigail Tere-Apisah in the first round of the NCAA Division I Women’s Doubles Championship today at the University of Georgia’s Dan Magill Tennis Complex.
The loss also marks the end of Stancu’s collegiate career. The two-year Texas A&M letterwinner from Romania was the only senior on the Aggies’ roster this season.
“Today we played reasonably well but the Georgia State opposition was superb,” A&M head coach Howard Joffe said. “This brings to an end our season and the career of Stancu. She has won many crucial matches for us and will no doubt be missed.”
The first set was on serve before the 25th-ranked Panthers went up a break at 5-3. GSU then held serve to win the set.
Early in the second set, the teams posted two service breaks apiece, but the contest got back on serve with 14th-ranked A&M leading 4-3. The set remained on serve, forcing it to be decided in a tiebreaker after the teams were knotted at 6-6. The tiebreaker was tied at 3-all before GSU outscored A&M 4-1 to win, 7-4, and close out the match.
Hristov, a sophomore also from Romania, and Stancu were making their second consecutive NCAA appearance in doubles and were looking to notch their first win at the postseason tournament. They finish the season, 24-11 overall.
The Georgia State tandem improves to 24-4 after posting its 10th consecutive victory.
This marks the 14th year A&M has competed in the NCAA Doubles Championship. A&M, which sent two teams to the 1986 tournament, is 2-15 all-time with Jessica Roland and Helga Vieira reaching the round of 16 in 2004 and Tiffany Clifford and Sarah Foster getting a first-round victory in 2006.
