Search Area Widens For Houston County Jail Escapee

Update from the Houston County sheriff’s office in Crockett, September 6, 2018:

Massive Search during nighttime hours ends with negative results.

Houston County deputies with assistance from Houston County Constable(s),Department of Public Safety Aviation, Rangers, and Troopers, Crockett Police, Trinity County Sheriff’s Office, Trinity County Constables, Groveton Police, Walker County Sheriff’s Office, Texas Department of Criminal Justice K9’s, Equine, and Office of Inspector General, US Marshals-Southern District, Gulf Coast Violent Offender and Fugitive Task Force and Joint East Texas Fugitive Task Force have completed an extensive search from Crockett south to the Trinity River. The search netted negative results.

We will now focus on areas outside Houston County. Including Walker and Montgomery counties. Texas Rangers and US Marshals Service will continue to assist in locating and apprehending this Fugitive.

All of our focus and resources have been placed on locating Wood. Now we will be reviewing how this escape was facilitated. What we did wrong and where we can make positive changes to better our odds of this not happening again.

We are so thankful to our community. They came out to support our search efforts by bringing water, Gatorade, snacks, and even offering to cook and bring meals. Your support has truly been amazing.

Update from the Houston County sheriff’s office in Crockett, September 4, 2018:

Numerous agencies have been assisting in the search for Bobby Eugene Wood.

We want to thank each agency for their help. Crockett Police, Texas Department of Criminal Justice, Office of Inspector General, Troopers with Texas Department of Public Safety along with the Texas Rangers, and Trinity County Sheriff’s Office.

Last night (Monday, September 3) approximately 10:20 PM our dispatch received a call from the railroad authority. The train conductor spotted a male sitting the train tracks on that run parallel to SH 19. The description of the male and his clothing matched Wood’s.

During the investigation we learned that Wood obtained a pair of red and black shorts. The conductor advised that the grey haired male was wearing a dark jacket and red and black shorts.

He was spotted near an area known as 4 mile park.

Law enforcement converged on this area and we began an intense track with TDCJ scent specific dog(s) then later TDCJ pack dogs were used.

We are actively searching for Wood and a warrant for escape has been issued by a judge.

Bobby Eugene Wood is a W/M 55 yrs old, DOB 08/11/1963, 5’07” tall, 160-180 lbs, gray hair and balding, and green eyes.

Do not attempt to detain this person. He should be considered dangerous.

On September 3rd, 2018 at 6:05 AM Houston County Jail Inmate, Bobby Eugene Wood escaped from custody.

Wood is a pre-trial detainee and has been assigned to work in the kitchen as a trustee.

This morning while preparing and serving meals, Wood complained of feeling ill. He was allowed to go to restroom. During this time he made his escape.

It is believed that Wood propped the kitchen receiving door open sometime during his shift in the kitchen.

Wood escaped from the receiving door and fled east towards the city park area.

Wood was last seen wearing Black and White striped jail clothing and was wearing a dark colored jacket.

Bobby Eugene Wood is a W/M 55 yrs old, DOB 08/11/1963, 5’07” tall, 160-180 lbs, gray hair and balding, and green eyes.

If you should see this person you are urged to call 911.

Do not attempt to detain this person. He should be considered dangerous.
