SAN ANTONIO (AP) _ Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney is castigating career politicians as he tries to differentiate himself from chief rival Rick Perry while standing on the Texan’s home turf.
The former Massachusetts governor doesn’t mention Perry by name in remarks prepared for delivery to the Veterans of Foreign Wars. But the contrast he’s trying to draw is clear.
And it comes as national polls show Perry overtaking Romney, who for months has led the pack seeking the GOP presidential nomination.
Romney is calling himself a conservative businessman who has spent most of his life outside of politics, dealing with the real economy. He also says — quote– “Career politicians got us into this mess and they simply don’t know how to get us out.”
Perry spoke to the same group on Monday.
