The attempt to arrest a suburban Bryan woman Tuesday over the noon hour for failing to pay child support led to a nine mile chase and additional charges.
Precinct 3 Deputy Constable Joe Matejka found 43 year old Brenda Smith driving near her home in the Rustic Oaks development off FM 1179 east of Bryan.
Pct. 3 Deputy Constable Joe Matejka, visiting with WTAW’s Bill Oliver.
According to the arrest report, when Smith’s full-size SUV turn without using a signal, the deputy tried to stop her.
Instead, Smith drove down Grassbur Road and stopped at 1179, where the officer pulled his car in front of the SUV. Matejka got out, drew his handgun, and ordered Smith to get out.
After the deputy got his hand on the door handle the vehicle started moving, causing the officer to let go. Then Smith’s Expedition bumped the deputy twice before driving away on 1179.
The pursuit went into the Miramont development, joined by other constable and sheriff’s patrol officers. A rolling roadblock was used to stop Smith on Boonville Road near Christopher’s.
Smith was again ordered to get out but refused. That led to smashing out the driver’s side window of the SUV and two officers removing Smith.
Smith refused to give permission for a search inside her vehicle. That brought out the Bryan Police Department’s K-9 team, where dogs sniffing the perimeter of the vehicle detected drugs. Inside, officers found was tested positive for methamphetamine.
