Roadcheck Campaign is Underway

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) _ The Texas Department of Public Safety has joined a three-day nationwide safety effort called Roadcheck targeting commercial vehicles and drivers.

Texas troopers on Tuesday began their upgraded enforcement by watching for 18-wheelers and buses with serious equipment violations. DPS will also be on the lookout for aggressive passenger vehicle drivers _ the cause of most commercial vehicle crashes.

Last year’s Roadcheck operation in Texas led to the inspection of more than 9,200 commercial vehicles by troopers and other law enforcement personnel.

DPS says about 21 percent of those vehicles had serious violations that required the truck or bus be taken out of service for repairs. Inspectors also removed 248 drivers for violations including not having the proper license for the vehicle being operated.
