Red Cross: Prepare Now for Bad Times

WASHINGTON (AP) _ The American Red Cross says the time to get ready for a disaster is when none is imminent.

September is National Disaster Preparedness Month and the Red Cross says the time should be used to evaluate the ability to survive a serious situation.

Red Cross Disaster Services chief Joe Becker says there are two key components to preparedness: to plan what to take with you and to develop a family plan.

Becker says you should discuss where you’ll meet and who you’ll call out of town to coordinate if you can’t contact each other. Have a plastic box packed with important documents and survival materials ready to take with you, and another one to use at home if you’re confined there for days without electricity and unable to get more food, water or supplies.
