A Navasota man convicted in August by a Brazos County district court jury of stealing a tractor, trailer, and other equipment five and a half years ago was sentenced this month by the judge to six years in prison. According to the district attorney’s office, it’s the seventh time 54 year old Gary Carey has been convicted of stealing heavy equipment and vehicles. Prosecutors say they were able to triple the normal punishment of two years due to Carey’s criminal history, which includes 12 prior felonies in five different counties. The victim discovered the theft on rural property south of College Station after what was stolen was sold twice…first to an individual in Brenham, then to a dealership in Tyler. According to online records, Carey has been in the Brazos County jail 18 times in the last 15 years. According to the DA’s office, Carey’s felony convictions in Brazos County include three for forgery, three for theft, and one for possession of a controlled substance. In Grimes County, he has two felony convictions for theft and one for forgery. And Carey has one conviction for felony theft in Robertson and Hunt counties.
Another Brazos County district court jury convicted a Navasota man of family violence aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. That jury then deliberated one hour before sentencing 28 year old Gabriel Jones to life in prison and issued at $10,000 dollar fine. In April of 2016, College Station police learned the mother was stabbed around 20 times, including once across her throat. Jones was at the woman’s apartment to visit their child when an argument led to the stabbing. Jones becomes eligible for parole after serving 30 years.
A Bryan man in jail since last December has admitted to strangling a woman while she was in a wheelchair. According to the Brazos County district attorney’s office, 56 year old Johnny Ray Jackson was sentenced to 35 years in prison. Prosecutors say this will be Jackson’s seventh time to prison. At the time of his arrest, Jackson was also being held on a parole violation. According to the victim, Jackson stopped strangling her after she stopped fighting him.
