ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) _ The Texas Rangers selected outfielder Delino DeShields in the draft of unprotected players on the final day of baseball’s winter meetings.
DeShields was the eighth overall pick by Houston in the 2010 first-year amateur draft and had spent his entire professional career in the Astros organization before Texas took him in the Rule 5 draft Thursday.
After playing exclusively as a second baseman his first three pro seasons, he moved to the outfield last year. He is the 22-year-old son of former big leaguer Delino DeShields, who played for five teams from 1990-2002. The Rangers will have to keep DeShields on their major league roster all season or return him to the Astros.
Texas also Thursday signed right-handers Anthony Bass and Ross Wolf and switch-hitting outfielder Antoan Richardson to minor league contracts that included invitations to major league spring training.
SAN DIEGO (AP) _ The already powerful Detroit Tigers’ offense is now even more imposing. The Tigers have acquired outfielder Yoenis Cespedes (YOH’-eh-nihs SEHS’-puh-dehs) in a trade with Boston. In return the Red Sox are getting 15-game winner Rick Porcello for their rotation.
SAN DIEGO (AP) _ The Cincinnati Reds have worked out two deals today. They sent pitcher Mat Latos (LAY’-tohs) to the Marlins for prospects and pitcher Alfredo Simon to the Tigers for a pair of young players. Simon was a 15-game winner for the National League club this past season.
SAN DIEGO (AP) _ The New York Mets have come to terms on a one-year contract with veteran John Mayberry Jr. He played for the Phillies and Blue Jays last season and had seven home runs and 23 runs batted in.
