Raney Lauds State’s Compromise with Amazon

Rep. John Raney (R-Bryan)

News that the state of Texas and Amazon.com have reached a truce on sales tax collections is good news, according to one elected official.

State Rep. John Raney (R-Bryan) says the settlement over $269 million in uncollected sales taxes should mean good things for Texas.

Raney, who also owns Texas Aggieland Book Store, has long advocated sales tax collections for online purchases saying it levels the playing field between online retailers and traditional or so-called “brick and mortar” stores.

The feud between Texas and Amazon.com centered on an Amazon warehouse in Irving the state said qualified for taxation.

Under the agreement, Texas will forgive the tax debt. Amazon, for its part, agrees to invest $200 million in the state and create 2,500 Texas jobs over the next four years.

At least three bills are currently in Congress focusing on clearer federal policies regarding Internet sales tax collections. Links to more information on those bills is below.
