Monday update:

Those who work and live in downtown Bryan have known for some time that the days may be numbered for their local post office.

Sandy Farris of the Downtown Bryan Association says they were notified by city officials several years ago.

Farris says the postal service has not indicated how much longer the branch will remain open.

Farris says the reaction of most people was disappointment, but added they understood times change and they will have to adjust their driving habits to go make the more than three mile trip each way to the main post office.

All the postal service has released is that the downtown Bryan location has lost revenue and volume over the last several years and there are a number of alternative sites nearby that can sell stamps and mail most packages.

Original story:

There’s not enough business at the post office in downtown Bryan to satisfy the postal service.

And the Houston area manager has sent a notice that there are possible changes due to a steady decline in volume and/or revenue.

Questions will be answered by a postal representative on October 2nd from 5 until 6 p.m. at Bryan’s main post office on William Joel Bryan, near the freeway.

The notice from the area manager states that within a short radius of the downtown post office there are alternative locations to mail packages and buy stamps.

The manager said their tentative plans…which were not disclosed…would lead to a formal proposal only if they were satisfied that maximum degree of regular and effective service can be provided…something else that was not identified.
