Pryor’s Near Triple Double Gives Aggies 78-66 Victory over VCU

Texas A&M’s Ny’Ceara Pryor put together a ridiculous stat line of 18 points, 11 assists, nine rebounds and six steals to lead the Aggies to a 78-66 triumph over VCU at the Cannon Activities Center in the first game of the North Shore Showcase Sunday morning.
Fatmata Janneh scored nine points and grabbed a season-high 15 rebounds while Janae Kent poured in a career-high 17 points in her first start of the season. The Maroon & White shot a blistering 61.1% from the field in the second half and converted six of their final eight shots of the game to seal the victory.
Janneh kicked things off with a 3-pointer six seconds into the game to break the ice, 3-0. The Maroon & White would continue to build on an unanswered lead, going on an 8-0 run until VCU’s first points. The quarter was spearheaded by Aggie free throws, going 8-10 from the line. The Aggies would round out the quarter with a 17-12 lead.
VCU took control in the early going of the second frame with a 6-2 run to start. The Rams went on to tie the game with 3:27 left at 23-all, led by guard Mary-Anna Asare with five points. The Aggies would regain the lead and go into the half up 30-26. Pryor led Texas A&M in the first half with five points, six rebounds, three assists and three steals.
VCU would go on to open the second half with a jump shot with 8:44 left on the clock. Kent was quick to answer with a fast break jumper six seconds later. Texas A&M dominated the boards in the third quarter, grabbing 15 boards to VCU’s five. Janneh had five on her own, helping give the Aggies eight second chance points in the frame. Graduate guard Jordan Webster hit a 3-pointer to end the quarter, 56-50.
The Aggie’s opened the final period with a burst of momentum, scoring eight unanswered points to force the Rams to take a timeout. The Maroon & White’s effort couldn’t be stopped, going 13-1 to induce another timeout with 5:46 remaining. Pryor came alive in the fourth scoring nine points while shooting a perfect 4-of-4 from the field and dishing out four assists with three steals to vault the Aggies to a 78-66 finish.
The Maroon & White return to the hardwood in Hawaii Monday with a 4 p.m. tipoff against UTA.
