The state fire marshal’s office has taken over the investigation of this week’s fire on the A&M campus.

But university officials have released preliminary findings that led to the evacuation of the Zachry Engineering Center.

Authorities believe the fire started from a mechanical failure in a heat exhaust duct, where enough heat was generated in an enclosed area to ignite construction material.

No one was hurt, while classes were cancelled Monday afternoon and evening.
