COLLEGE STATION—Craig Potts was promoted to athletics field manager at Texas A&M University, Aggie senior associate athletics director Kevin Hurley announced on Thursday.
“Craig has been a valuable asset to our athletics department for many years and was the best person to fulfill this position,” Hurley announced. “He is well respected not only locally and regionally, but nationally as well.”
Potts, a 1986 Bryan High School graduate, has served as the assistant athletics field manager since 1996 working alongside longtime mentor Leo Goertz. Potts was named athletics department Teammate of the month in 2013 for his unselfish work and outstanding support of Aggie athletics.
The previous athletics field manager, Leo Goertz, passed away unexpectedly in Dec. of 2015.
“My wish would be for Leo to still be in his position here at Texas A&M because he was so much more than my boss, he was a very close and dear friend,” Potts explained. “Leo has left a great legacy as well as a great staff of assistants and students. We will do our very best to make him and Texas A&M proud. I am honored and humbled to accept this position. It has been a dream come true to work with the athletics fields here in Aggieland.”
The athletics field staff has managed and maintained the playing surfaces at all Texas A&M athletics venues such as Kyle Field, the Coolidge Practice Fields, Ellis Field, the Aggie Softball Complex as well as Olsen Field at Blue Bell Park.
Before joining the Aggie athletics staff, Potts was an agricultural research technician for Texas A&M University working closely with graduate students and assisting in research and construction of new turf areas and he was responsible for the general maintenance of the Texas A&M Turf Field Laboratory.
After his graduation from Texas A&M in 1990 with a degree in Range Science, Potts worked with Trugreen-Chemlawn and earned his applicators license, was licensed in structural pest control as well as licensed in lawn, ornamental and weed control.
Potts is a member of the Texas Turfgrass Association, Texas Sports Turf Managers Association as well as the National Sports Turf Managers Association. He is a past president of the South Texas Sports Turf Managers Association and a current board member of the Texas Turfgrass Association and served as the organization’s president in 2006.
Kyle Field earned the 2015 Texas Turfgrass Association Football Field of the Year. In 2010, Potts received the Sports Turf Managers Association Founders Award, the George Toma Golden Rake Award. The softball, baseball and football fields have all won national honors.
Potts is married and his wife’s name is Carol, they have two daughters who attend Bryan High School, Avery is a senior and Madison is a sophomore.
