Poll: Economy Tops Texans’ Concerns

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) _ Texans overwhelmingly believe the economy is the most important issue facing the country and expect gloomy conditions to get worse.

That’s according to the nonpartisan Texas Lyceum Poll released Tuesday. The poll annually tests Texans’ attitudes on current events.

The poll found almost half are not very confident about the safety of their retirement funds.

In other issues, Texans largely support the idea of requiring more identification to vote and expanding rights for gay marriage.

Daron Shaw, a government professor at the University of Texas at Austin who helped conduct the poll, says Texans don’t “support gay marriage per se” but also aren’t opposed to expanded legal rights for same sex couples.
