Political Fundraiser Trial Underway

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas (AP) _ A south Texas jury viewed surveillance video from a Corpus Christi convenience store as the trial of Mauricio Celis began.

The 38-year-old Democratic fundraiser is charged with impersonating a public servant by using a reserve deputy badge after suspension of his law enforcement commission. If convicted, he could be sentenced to up to 10 years in prison.

The Corpus Christi Caller-Times reports the case stems from a 2007 incident in which a bystander called police after a nude woman climbed into her truck after leaving Celis’ home. The video screened Tuesday showed the encounter.

Celis was convicted last year of impersonating a lawyer and is appealing that verdict. He faces two other trials on money laundering and theft charges.
