Police: Waco Overpass Jumper Killed Ex

WACO, Texas (AP) _ Authorities say a man who died after jumping from an 80-foot-high interstate overpass is suspected of fatally stabbing his former girlfriend.

Police say Jessie Zapata died Monday night at a Waco hospital after jumping off the overpass onto Interstate 35 near State Highway 6 in Robinson.

A Waco police spokesman says police received calls Monday night that a man had pulled over and was walking around on the overpass south of Waco. One caller said he cut or stabbed himself before jumping.

Police shut down the northbound lanes of the interstate for about 30 minutes after the man jumped. A Robinson police officer says he found a knife on the road near where Zapata, 35, landed.

Authorities say that Carolina Tovar’s son returned home Monday and found her stabbed to death in her Lacy-Lakeview home near Waco.

The Waco Tribune-Herald reports that police say Tovar, 28, met Zapata at work about seven years ago, and he was the father of one of her children.
