Plea in Fairfield Rancher Murder

HOUSTON (AP) _ An Alabama man sentenced to die for an east Texas rancher after an Alabama jailbreak has agreed to a life sentence in another murder that also could have put him on death row in Texas.

Thirty-five-year-old Oscar Roy Doster took a plea deal Tuesday during jury selection for his capital murder trial in Fairfield, about 140 miles north of Houston in Freestone County.

Doster’s attorney, John Wright, says fsentencing is scheduled for later this week.

Doster was accused of fatally shooting rancher Dennis Courtney in April 2005 and stealing a pickup truck and other items from Courtney’s ranch. At the time, Doster and a companion, James Harnage, were escapees from a jail in Andalusia, Ala.

Doster was arrested in California four weeks later. Harnage was arrested in Las Vegas.
