There weren’t enough qualified jurors to hold one criminal trial last week in Brazos County district court.
That led the district attorney’s office to make plea agreement offer to charges from three years ago, which was accepted by a man who used to live in Bryan.
29 year old Angel Morin admitted to his fourth DWI and family violence assault with a prior conviction. Morin agreed to a 15 year sentence.
Had the charges gone to trial, he faced a maximum of 20 years.
In August 2018, prosecutors say Morin’s blood alcohol level was almost three times the legal limit at .239 after the vehicle he was driving struck multiple vehicles.
In October 2018, Morin was arrested for striking and dragging his then-girlfriend in the yard of their home.
Morin faces trials in Travis County on two more DWI charges from last year.
News release from the Brazos County district attorney’s office:
Angel Morin, 29, pled guilty to the enhanced second-degree felony offenses of Driving While Intoxicated — 3rd or More Offense and Assault Family Violence with a Prior Conviction. As a result of his plea, Morin was sentenced to 15 years in prison.
On August 30, 2018, the College Station Fire Department was dispatched to Spec’s Liquor on University Avenue in response to reports of an unresponsive male passed out behind the wheel of a wrecked vehicle. The caller reported that the male, later identified as the defendant, appeared to be intoxicated.
When College Station firefighters attempted to treat Morin, the defendant became violently aggressive and threatened to assault the first responders. As a result, CSFD requested that the College Station Police Department respond to the scene.
Subsequent investigation by the College Station Police Department and the Brazos County District Attorney’s Office revealed that the defendant and his vehicle matched the description of a suspect who was reported to be driving recklessly in parking lots and engaged in a hit and run with multiple other vehicles in the hour before the call at Spec’s. The defendant was arrested for driving while intoxicated. A warrant was obtained for the defendant’s blood, which showed his BAC to be 0.239, almost three times the legal limit.
On October 10, 2018, Bryan Police were dispatched to the home of Morin’s girlfriend after independent witnesses reported seeing Morin assaulting and dragging his girlfriend in the yard of her home. When
police arrived, they found the victim with multiple visible injuries consistent with the victim being dragged and assaulted. At that time, the defendant was arrested for Assault Family Violence with a
Prior Conviction.
While out on bond, Morin was arrested for DWI by the Austin Police Department and the Pflugerville Police Department on two separate occasions. After these arrests, Brazos County prosecutors successfully petitioned the court to revoke the defendant’s bonds pending trial.
Prior to his Brazos County cases, the defendant had previously been convicted of Assault Family Violence, Resisting Arrest, Assault Public Servant, and Driving While Intoxicated.
The defendant had previously been sentenced to both felony and misdemeanor probation and had served 30 months in prison for Assault Public Servant and Driving While Intoxicated 3rd or More.
