Planning Continues To Sell And/Or Decommission The Gibbons Creek Power Plant

The city of Bryan and the other Texas cities that own the now closed Gibbons Creek power plant in Grimes County continue their exit strategy.

Bryan is part of the Texas Municipal Power Agency (TMPA), along with the cities of Denton, Garland, and Greenville.

The city’s chief financial officer, Joe Hegwood, and BTU general manager Gary Miller told the city council the estimate to officially close and clean up all the property outside of Carlos is $90 million dollars. BTU’s share is $19 million. And Miller says costs could continue for 30 years.

The total cost depends on when the property is sold. TMPA owns 6,700 acres at the former coal fired plant and more than 10,000 acres that used to be mined.

Hegwood and Miller also say BTU has budgeted $40 million dollars to purchase TMPA’s transmission system.

The council also learned BTU made its last debt service payment to TMPA related to electric generation at Gibbons Creek. The $22 million dollar payment was made on July 1st.
