EDCOUCH, Texas (AP) _ Two 10-year-old boys have been released to their parents after police accused them of selling marijuana at their south Texas middle school.
Police in the south Texas farming town of Edcouch took the boys into custody about 2:30 p.m. Tuesday for allegedly dealing at David Ybarra Middle School. Police Chief Eloy Cardenas tells The Monitor of McAllen that officers confiscated $40 from the boys, mostly in crumpled $1 bills.
In the chief’s words, “They were selling little Baggies for $2 apiece. It adds up.” Cardenas says his officers are looking for any adults who might have been supplying the children.
Cardenas says the children’s case has been referred to Hidalgo County juvenile authorities.
Edcouch is a town of about 4,600 residents about 20 miles northeast of the lower Rio Grande Valley border city of McAllen. Ybarra Middle School has an enrollment of about 800 students.
