There is a movement in Bryan to rename 21st Street to Carey Cauley Jr. Street. Helen Washington, a family friend, says the late county commissioner was very influential in the community.

“He was a good mentor to the young men that were growing up in this community because a lot of young men didn’t grow up with a male figure in the house,” said Washington.

Washington says 38 residents who live on 21st Street signed the petition in favor of the name change, along with 217 other residents. She said there was one woman they spoke to who opposed to the name change because she had lived on 21st Street her entire life.

Washington said the next step is to get the item on the Bryan city council agenda and have a great community turnout at the council meeting.

“And I would like to see our city councilmen in support of us, the majority of them,” said Washington.

Among other things, Carey Cauley Jr. was a school teacher, a minister, and he worked at the Boys & Girls Club.
