HOUSTON (AP) _ Democrat Bill White has told a Houston gubernatorial debate that it’s important that state government is “well-run as a public service for all people and not as a political machine.”
His comment refers to a Dallas Morning News report Sunday that more than $16 million from the Texas Emerging Technology Fund has gone to companies with ties to major campaign donors of Gov. Rick Perry’s.
Also participating in the debate were Libertarian Kathie Glass and Green Party candidate Deb Shafto. Perry had said he wouldn’t debate White unless he releases more income tax returns than he has already.
The Houston Chronicle reports Glass endorsed securing the border with Mexico with the Texas Guard, cutting the state budget by 15 percent and abolishing franchise and property taxes. Shafto endorsed many of White’s positions and urged that Texas be “the clean-energy leader of the whole world.”
