A longtime member of the Brazos County Commission, Randy Sims, died Thursday.

Sims was Brazos County Judge from 2003 through 2011. Before that, he served two terms as Precinct 3 county commissioner, from 1972-1976 then 1989-2001.

Sims was also on the Bryan city council from 1986-1988.

Current county judge Duane Peters, who followed Sims, considered him a mentor. Peters working relationship began when he was elected constable in 1993 and later when Peters was elected to the commission.

Peters praised Sims’ ability to get along with everyone probably came from the time he was in the restaurant business. Randy Sims Barbecue was located on South Texas in Bryan in the building that is now the home of Jose’s. Peters recalled getting bottles of Sims’ secret sauce as a Christmas present.

Peters says among the projects Sims had a hand as commissioner and county judge were the Brazos County Expo, the new county jail, the courthouse renovation, and the groundwork for the new tax office that is now under construction.

A biographical sketch provided by the county clerk’s office noted Sims’ service to many local and state organizations.

Randy and his wife, Brenda, were named citizens of the year at the Chamber of Commerce annual banquet last November.
