Panhandle Roads Reopen After Blizzard

AMARILLO, Texas (AP) _ A Texas Department of Public Safety spokeswoman says all roads are open and clear Sunday in Amarillo in the aftermath of a spring blizzard.

The National Weather Service said the blizzard dumped as much as 11 inches of snow over a 24-hour period. NWS meteorologist Chris Kimble in Amarillo said that most of the snow has melted.

Authorities in Dalhart, the worst hit, rescued 136 stranded motorists, Dalhart Fire Chief and Emergency Management Coordinator Curtis Brown told the Amarillo Globe-News for its Sunday online edition.

The blizzard caused numerous accidents and paralyzed the region, but there were no reported deaths. It was part of a storm system that moved into the region late Thursday and has raged all over the Southern High Plains.

Temperatures were expected to reach about 70 on Sunday.
