Nutrition Tips From the Texas A&M Agrilife Extension Service

The new year is a time when many consider healthier eating habits, and Family and Consumer Sciences Agent Flora Williams with Texas A&M Agrilife in Brazos County says knowing how many calories you need, and balancing them, is a great first step.

Williams says many things you can do to reduce your calories will also enrich your overall eating experience.

She says to take time to fully enjoy your food and try not to eat too fast so that your body can register that you’re full.

For portion control, Williams recommends using a smaller plate, bowl, or glass, and when eating out, choose smaller portion sizes, take home part of the meal, or share it with a friend.

You should also focus on what to  eat, instead of simply on which foods to avoid.

Williams says eating enough fruits, vegetables, and whole grains will make a big difference.

She says half of your plate should be fruits and vegetables, choosing red, orange and dark green vegetables like tomatoes, sweet potatoes, and broccoli, along with other vegetables.

She says half of your grains should be whole grains, and low fat dairy products are also a good choice.

Meanwhile, Williams says many calories sneak in through sugary drinks, so opt for plenty of water instead.
