Northpoint Crossing Pulls Request To Convert Empty Retail Space To More Apartments

In its second year of operation, the owners of the Northpoint Crossing development at University and Texas asked College Station officials to let them turn half of the vacant retail space into more student apartments.

After the planning and zoning commission unanimously recommended to deny the request, Northpoint withdrew the proposal before Monday’s city council meeting.

During last week’s P&Z meeting, chairwoman Jane Kee responded to Northpoint’s observation that approval was given earlier this summer to a similar request for the owners of The Lofts at Wolf Pen Creek at Dartmouth and Holleman. Kee noted the Wolf Pen Creek location had been in operation for at least seven years.

Commissioner Barry Moore also wanted Northpoint to give more time to develop retail.

In response to a Northpoint request to hold a third P&Z hearing to allow time for owners from California to speak, Commissioner Jim Ross said enough time had been devoted.

Commissioner Jodi Warner said Northpoint retail could work in small spaces, comparing them businesses inside airport terminals. She also said they would benefit from the increasing number of hotels within walking distance.
