COLLEGE STATION, Texas – The No. 5 Texas A&M Aggies registered their sixth shutout of the season Sunday evening at Ellis Field, blanking the William & Mary Tribe, 2-0.
The victory gave the Aggies an 8-0-0 start for the first time since 1997 and just the third time in program history. The win streak to start the season is one shy of the school record set in 1996 and equaled the following season.
The Maroon & White boast a school-record 23-match unbeaten streak with their last loss coming at Auburn (0-1) on September 15, 2017.
The shutout continued the best defensive start in Texas A&M annals. The six shutouts are the most through eight matches and the two goals are the fewest allowed in that span.
The Aggies have strung together nine consecutive games with multiple goals. It marks the longest stretch for the Maroon & White since 10 in a row back in 2001.
One match after having a five-match goal-scoring string snapped, Ally Watt found the back of the net again. She scored in the 84th minute with assists from Ásdís Halldórsdóttir and Kendall Ritchie.
The Aggies’ first goal came on an own goal off a corner kick. It marked the 10th set-piece goal of the season by the Maroon & White.
Cosette Morché made two saves to notch her 20th Division I shutout and her 14th in two seasons in Aggieland.
For the match, Texas A&M dominated the tally for shots (25-7), shots-on-goal (14-2) and corner kicks (10-0).
GOAL SUMMARY
18′ – The Aggies broke the scoring seal on an own goal. Ritchie sent a corner kick in from the right side. Three yards in front of the goal mouth, Tribe netminder Katelyn Briguglio tried to punch the ball away from danger but the ball went into goal. A&M 1, W&M 0.
84′ – Ritchie sent a long pass through the midfield finding Halldórsdóttir on the attacking edge of the center circle. Halldórsdóttir took two touches and then a perfectly weighted ball through the defense to Ally Watt entering the penalty box right of the arc. She unleashed a right-footed worm burner from 15 yards out into the left side-netting for her seventh goal of the season. A&M 2, W&M 0.

TEXAS A&M QUOTES
Head Coach G Guerrieri
On tonight’s game…
“We’re always looking for better. By better, I mean to fix up the little things. From the first half to the second half we cleaned up a lot of those little things. I thought our strikers were much more dangerous in the way that they positioned themselves against the backline of William & Mary. Our defense, the whole night was really solid. It’s going to be difficult for a team to beat our backline for speed when you’ve got Jordan {Hill} and Kendall {Ritchie} on the outside and no one runs away from Bri Alston. That gives us the ability to do a lot of things. We just have to keep it clean. We were breaking ourselves down in the first half, as much as an organized opponent was.”
On the second goal…
“It was a really good goal, a really good run by Ally Watt and a really well weighted pass by Ásdís {Halldórsdóttir} to put it in there. Their goalkeeper made four breakaway saves that were really difficult saves. There was a couple that we just hit her on the hands with but she made four big saves to keep the game close. We needed one more to be able to breathe.”
On the feeling going into SEC play…
“We feel confident. Being 8-0 is exactly where we want to be. We’ve been able to use a lot of different people in a few different roles so we feel pretty good about how we can adjust to things that really good athletic, SEC teams like LSU are going to throw at us.”
Sophomore midfielder Addie McCain
On how they played differently with Emily Bates not available for the match…
“I mean it is difficult. She is not a player that is easily replaceable, so the mindset is just to get in there and do the best I can do. We are different types of players, but we all are and we all work together. The thing is just to get in there and do what I do well. We are not replacing her because she will be back, but just being able to compensate what we are missing with her.”
On being 8-0-0 going into the SEC…
“I feel really good with where we are. I know we haven’t reached our full potential which is the cool thing. We have seen what we can do. I think the goal is just being able to get better and try to play our best every single game.”
