AUBURN, Ala. – The No. 17 Texas A&M softball team rallied late, scoring one run in the seventh and two in the eighth, to defeat No. 6 Auburn, 6-5, Friday at Jane B. Moore Field.
With two outs in the seventh and trailing 4-3, sophomore Ashley Walters dropped in a single to right center, scoring freshman Keeli Milligan from second.
In the eighth, freshman Samantha Show led off the inning with a solo home run as senior Cali Lanphear followed suit with her 11thhomer of the season to give the Aggies (36-16, 8-14 SEC) a 6-4 advantage.
“I thought our pitchers did a great job tonight,” head coach Jo Evans said. “They gave up two earned runs to a very potent offense and gave us a chance to get a big win on the road. Our hitters did a great job with the strike zone and attacking their pitchers. We took the momentum from the Florida win on Sunday into the game tonight. It was a great team win for us.”
After Auburn took an early 1-0 in the second, Texas A&M responded with three runs in third. Milligan recorded a leadoff infield single and moved to second on a freshman Kaitlyn Alderink groundout. Sophomore Ashley Walters knocked in Milligan on a double to right center, and later scored on a sophomore Kristen Cuyos home run, her 14th of the season.
Auburn regained the lead in the fifth, scoring two unearned runs on a Courtney Shea double. Prior to tonight, the Tigers were 67-0 when leading after the sixth inning in the last three seasons.
Show earned her 22nd victory of the season, throwing three innings of relief, giving up two hits, an unearned run while striking out three. Sophomore Trinity Harrington started the game with five innings of work with six hits, four runs, two earned, and a strikeout.
The Aggies and Tigers return to action Saturday at 1 p.m. on ESPN. The contest can also be heard locally on KWBC 1550 AM or online at www.RadioAggieland.com.
