No. 12 Texas A&M Blanks Lamar, 8-0

COLLEGE STATION, Texas — The No. 12 Texas A&M softball team defeated the Lamar Cardinals, 8-0, Wednesday night at the Aggie Softball Complex.

Aggie starter Samantha Show (9-3) struck out seven in her complete-game effort. The Cardinals (18-15) managed three hits, all singles, and were only able to get one runner to third base. Show came up big with Cardinals on the base paths, holding Lamar to 0-for-9 with runners on base.

Offensively for Texas A&M (30-7), Riley SartainKristen Cuyos and Ashley Walters all played long ball in the contest. The A&M offense put up runs in five of their six innings totaling 12 hits, including five for extra bases. They also worked two walks and for the first time since March 1, avoided striking out. The Aggies took advantage of runners on base all evening hitting 6-for-10 with runners in scoring position.


KEY INNINGS

B1 | Walters came through in the first with a two-out single for the game’s first run scoring Alderink who reached with a walk. After a wild pitch put Walters on second, Cuyos doubled the Aggie advantage with a two-bagger in the gap.

B2 | In the second, Keeli Milligan started a mini-rally with a two-out walk followed by a swipe of second, her 24th of the season. Tori Vidales zipped a double to left plating the third Aggie run of the contest.

B4 | With one down and full count, Sartain hit the first of the Aggies’ three long balls, this one off Lamar starter Taylor Gruell (7-5). The junior’s ninth homer of the season broke a 0-for-9 stretch for Sartain.
 
B5 | After Lamar brought in Laura Napoli to relieve Grouse, the Aggies took full advantage with back-to-back blasts. Walters towered a two-run shot, giving her three RBI in the game, followed by Cuyos’ fifth home of the season, a driving blow to left.

B6 | In need of an additional score to trigger the run rule, Blake Ann Fritsch and Milligan found their way on with singles. Vidales ended the contest taking a 2-2 pitch up the middle for a game-ending single.

The Aggies host South Carolina for a three-game SEC series. The 9th-ranked Gamecocks come to town riding a three-game sweep of the then No. 2 Tennessee Volunteers. First pitch between A&M and SC on Friday is set for 6:30.
