No. 11 Women’s Golf Shoots -7, Tied for Fourth at NCAA Regionals

The No. 11 Texas A&M women’s golf team shot a seven-under 281 and sits in a tie for fourth after the first round of the NCAA San Antonio Regional at Briggs Ranch Golf Club. The top six teams in the event advance to the NCAA Championships in Bradenton, Fla. from May 22-27.

“I thought it was a good round—you can never complain about a seven-under,” said Texas A&M head coach Trelle McCombs. “I thought we did a great job of battling back and overcoming a rough start to the round.”

The Aggies have shot a combined 20-under par in their last two rounds at Briggs Ranch Golf Club, after closing the Alamo Invitational with a 13-under par round in October. Texas A&M has shot seven-under or better six times in school history, with five of those instances coming in 2014-15, including each of A&M’s last three rounds, dating back to the SEC Championship second round.

Andrea Jonama led the Aggies with a four-under 68 on the par 72 / 6350-yard course, and sits in a tie for third in the tournament. Jonama is one shot behind co-leaders Hayley Davis of Baylor and Yupaporn Kawinpakorn of Kansas, who both shot a 67 on Thursday.

Tennessee leads the tournament with a first round 276 (-12). The Aggies are seven shots ahead of the first team out, seventh-place Oklahoma, who shot a 288 (E).

Bianca Fabrizio, who won medalist honors at the SEC Championships, shot a 3-under 69, and is tied for eighth in the tournament. Marijosse Navarro also carded an under-par round, shooting a 1-under 71 and is tied for 24th.

Thanya Pattamakijsakul shot a 1-over 73, good for a tie for 39th. Maddie Szeryk rounded out the Aggies’ lineup, shooting a 3-over 75 and is tied for 56th.

The Aggies return to action with the second of three rounds at the NCAA San Antonio Regional with tee times starting at 8:24 on Friday. A&M is looking for their sixth NCAA Championship finals appearance in the last eight years.

Next season, Texas A&M and Traditions Club will host one of the four NCAA Women’s Golf Regionals.
