Newspaper Publisher Killed While Walking

BOWIE, Texas (AP) _ The publisher of a north Texas semiweekly newspaper is dead after a sport-utility vehicle hit her as she walked her dogs near her Bowie home.

Connie Booker Winter was pronounced dead at the scene of the 4:30 a.m. Sunday accident. The 66-year-old proprietor had been owner and publisher of The Bowie News since husband James H. Winter died in September 2003.

According to the Wichita Falls Times Record News, a Bowie police spokesman says the driver of the SUV said he slowed down when he saw a dog dart across his path. When he looked away from the dog, he saw the woman in his path and was unable to stop.

No charges have been filed against the driver.
