Newspaper: Dental Board Lags Behind Medical Board

AUSTIN (AP) _ A newspaper review of disciplinary records finds that the State Board of Dental Examiners is less likely to take disciplinary action against practitioners than the state medical board.

The Austin American-Statesman also reports the dental board is slower to act and less likely to impose the most severe sanction — loss of a license — than the State Board of Medical Examiners.

The newspaper reports the dental board is awaiting results of a state auditor’s review this month. The board regulates 15,950 dentists, more than 33,000 hygienists and registered assistants, and 1,083 laboratories.

The newspaper also reports Monday that the board routinely suspends dentists’ licenses, then probates those suspensions in full.
