New Mexico Man Arrested in Mail Threats

DALLAS (AP) _ A man apparently upset about losing nearly $64,000 in stock when a bank failed is accused of mailed threatening letters to financial offices.

Richard Leon Goyette appeared in court today in Albuquerque. He will be transferred to Texas to face charges.

Goyette is charged with knowingly and intentionally conveying false and misleading information.

If convicted, he faces a maximum five years in prison and a $250,000 fine.

Goyette is accused of mailing more than 60 threatening letters last fall. Some had an Amarillo postmark.

Someone used a computer in a library at the University of New Mexico to get addresses of Chase bank branches and federal agencies that later received threatening letters.

Authorities say Goyette in September sent e-mails to an agency that took over Washington Mutual Bank. Goyette wrote he lost $63,525 in stock because of the failure.
