COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Texas A&M senior designated hitter/catcher Mitchell Nau was tabbed the SEC Player of the Week by the conference office on Monday, honored for his effort in leading the Aggies to a 4-0 record, including a three-game road series sweep at Tennessee.
Nau posted a .700 on-base percentage for the week, including a .615 batting average (8-for-13) with two doubles, six walks, one stolen base, three runs and eight RBI.
With the honor, Nau becomes the first Aggie to ever earn SEC Player of the Week recognition. A&M players have earned SEC Pitcher of the Week accolades on three occasions, including Grayson Long twice this season, and SEC Freshman of the Week three times.
The Spring, Texas-native helped lead Texas A&M to its first-ever SEC three-game road series sweep, delivering the go-ahead RBI in the ninth of the opener on Friday, the three-run go-ahead double that broke open the 6-1 win on Saturday and the game-tying RBI on Sunday.
Friday night, Nau reached base in all five of his plate appearances, going 3-for-3 with two walks, one double, two runs and two RBI. Saturday night he delivered a three-run double in the fifth to break a 1-1 tie. Sunday afternoon Nau went 2-for-3 with two RBI. His RBI single in the fifth cut Tennessee’s lead to 5-4 and his sacrifice fly in the seventh tied the game at 5-5.
On the season, Nau leads the Aggies with a .378 batting average (65-for-172) and 12 doubles. He has 36 runs, three home runs and 40 RBI.
The Aggies own a 41-7 overall record and are tied with LSU atop the SEC Western Division with a 16-7 league ledger. Texas A&M returns to action on Friday, hosting the South Carolina Gamecocks for a three-game series.
