Clarke Wins Open

Northern Ireland has another major champion in golf.
Darren Clarke held off brief challenges from Americans Phil
Mickelson and Dustin Johnson to claim the British Open
championship. The 42-year-old is the third golfer from Northern
Ireland to capture a major title in the last six majors.
Clarke shot an even-par 70 over the final 18 holes at Royal St.
George’s and finished three shots clear of Mickelson and Johnson,
who shot 68 and 72, respectively.
Clarke finished at 5-under 275 and became the first player in
his 40s to win a major since Vijay Singh (VEE’-jay sing) at the
2004 PGA Championship. Only two other players were older than
Clarke when they won their first major — Roberto De Vicenzo was 44
when he took the 1967 British Open title, and Jerry Barber captured
the 1961 PGA Championship at the age of 45.
Clarke’s win extends the U.S drought in majors to six in a row.
It’s the Americans’ longest stretch without winning a major since
the Masters began in 1934.

U.S. Soccer team Falls to Japan
FRANKFURT, Germany (AP) _ The U.S. soccer team blew a 1-0
second-half lead and a 2-1 advantage in extra time before losing to
Japan 3-1 on penalty kicks in the women’s World Cup final.
Shannon Boxx, Carli Lloyd and Tobin Heath all missed penalties
for the Americans, who squandered dozens of chances throughout the
game and blew a lead just six minutes from winning their third
World Cup title.
The Americans had taken the lead in the 104th minute off a
header by Abby Wambach off a feed from Alex Morgan, who scored the
first goal of the game in the 69th minute.
Japan is the first Asian nation to win the World Cup. They did
it with their first win in 26 tries against the U.S.

A person familiar with the NFL labor negotiations says talks
will continue Monday in New York instead of Minneapolis.
The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of
anonymity because the discussions are supposed to remain
confidential.
U.S. Magistrate Judge Arthur Boylan had ordered both sides to
meet with him Tuesday in Minneapolis. Now, the court-appointed
mediator is expected to arrive in New York on Monday to oversee
talks as the league and its players work to end a four-month
lockout.
The owners and players made significant progress last week, but
potential sticking points remain, including re-establishing the
union and figuring out what it will take to for nine NFL players,
including Tom Brady, to settle their antitrust suit against the
league.
