Napolitano: No Politics in Border Checkpoint Money

DALLAS (AP) _ Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano says politics didn’t influence where stimulus money was spent on border checkpoints.

Napolitano was speaking Thursday at a Dallas news conference during a firefighter convention. She was responding to a review by The Associated Press that showed the Obama administration did not follow its internal priority list when handing out money to repair border stations nationwide.

According to the report, little-used border checkpoints received money while busier ports were passed over.

Napolitano said the AP story “was just wrong and I’ll say that because there was no kind of political issues involved there.” Napolitano did not say what was incorrect about the story and the department has not asked for a correction.

A House oversight committee has added the checkpoint projects to its investigation into how the stimulus money is being spent.
