Texas A&M athletics director Ross Bjork addressed the media Sunday evening following the Sunday morning firing of head football coach Jimbo Fisher.

The athletics department also issued the following statement from interim president Mark Welsh:

“The decision to part ways with Coach Fisher is the result of a thorough evaluation of the football program’s performance, and what’s in the best interest of the overall program and Texas A&M University.

Athletic Director Ross Bjork has my full support as he begins a national search for a new head coach. I am confident he will find a great coach and leader with a commitment to the values that drive Texas A&M.

I want to thank our student athletes for their dedication, hard work and the inspiration they give me and all Aggie fans each and every week.

I would also like to thank Coach Fisher for his years of service and commitment to his players, coaches and this university. I wish him the very best as he begins his next chapter.

A special thanks to Coach Elijah Robinson for stepping up to lead the charge for Aggie football.”

Texas A&M confirms head football coach Jimbo Fisher has been fired.

Athletic director Ross Bjork issued the following statement:

“After very careful analysis of all the components related to Texas A&M football, I recommended to President Welsh and then Chancellor Sharp that a change in the leadership of the program was necessary in order for Aggie football to reach our full potential and they accepted my decision. We appreciate Coach Fisher’s time here at Texas A&M and we wish him the best in his future endeavors.”

Bjork is scheduled to meet the media Sunday at 5 p.m. at Kyle Field.

Here is the ESPN report that preceded Bjork’s announcement:

Texas A&M informed Jimbo Fisher on Sunday morning that he has been fired as the Aggies’ coach, sources told ESPN.

Fisher will be paid the remaining $76 million on his deal, according to sources, a record amount for a buyout for a head coach. That figure more than doubles the highest known buyout ever paid to a fired college head coach.

Associate head coach Elijah Robinson is expected to serve as the interim coach, sources said.

The steps toward removing Fisher began in a Texas A&M board of regents meeting Thursday, sources said. A four-hour discussion about Fisher’s future led to the imminent decision.

TexAgs first reported the school’s plan to fire Fisher.

Texas A&M (6-4, 4-3 SEC) is coming off a 51-10 victory over Mississippi State on Saturday.

Fisher is 45-25 in six seasons at Texas A&M, and he had signed a new 10-year contract with $95 million guaranteed in 2021. That deal was given, in part, because of the potential at the time of Fisher leaving for LSU.

Since winning the Orange Bowl and finishing No. 4 in The Associated Press poll in 2020, Texas A&M has gone 19-15. The Aggies have not won the SEC West or played in the College Football Playoff during Fisher’s tenure.

Fisher arrived at Texas A&M in 2018 from Florida State, where he won a national title in 2013.

Texas A&M closes the season against Abilene Christian and LSU.
